JOSEPH SPIVAK: Good morning new Cornellians, family, friends, distinguished guests, and orientation volunteers. My name is Joseph Spivak. And it is my honor to be among the first to welcome you to Cornell. [APPLAUSE] I am chair of the 2015 Orientation Steering Committee, a group of 13 students that have worked since this past September planning for your arrival. We've scheduled and organized over 100 events, recruited, interviewed, and selected over 500 orientation volunteers, and together with all of our volunteers successfully moved over 2,000 cases of water, 5,000 suitcases. 15,000 boxes, and 20,000 pairs of shoes yesterday.

Between talks, the Cornell University Chorus and the Cornell Glee Club performed Cornell songs and the alma mater.

University Convocation Procession All staff and faculty are invited to participate in the procession that begins University Convocation. We encourage everyone to wear regalia, but it is optional. Please see the page to sign up for the procession and obtain regalia. When and where to gather The line up area will be staged at 9:30 a.m. In the lower corridor of the Coliseum.

How to get there From the tunnel doors, go left up the hallway to the Cougar Lounge. From the coliseum main concourse, take the stairs down to the Cougar Lounge (there is a sign above the entrance to the stairs).

The lounge lets onto the lower corridor. The lounge can be used to change into your regalia; personal belongings can be left there during the ceremony. The procession Deans of the colleges will lead the procession. A traditional symbol of authority, the University Mace was created for the inauguration of Samuel H.

Smith as the eighth president of WSU in 1986. The mace is traditionally carried by the chair of the Faculty Senate during the procession of faculty members and graduating students at commencement and during the faculty and staff procession at convocation. The two-foot long, nine-pound scepter, designed by Tim Doebler of WSU's Fine Arts Department, is cast in silver and bronze and features a globe atop a laurel branch. It is wrapped in a silver ribbon and has the inscription, 'Washington State University.'
